Chapter Fourteen

Cecelia Tries to Hide Quinn

“Who let her in!?” Maggie hissed under her breath as she slipped down onto the bench next to Jess. Jess motioned at Maggie with the same exasperated glare and scowl. My mouth hung agape, unable to form words. I shared a look with Jess in my disbelief. Both Quinn and Maggie at our lunch table. Just the week before we were shunned to the edge of the lunchroom by social hierarchy. Then with the appearance of Quinn, it seemed the world now revolved around our corner table. The lunchroom stared with soft murmurs, all eyes on us. It most likely had less to do with me and more Maggie—the talk of the school, and this time, she seemed to hate it.

News spread like wildfire of her video. People called her clickbait and whispered sharp words under their breath at her. That lasted till she coughed blood all over the cafeteria floor before the first period. Then it was a pity party. I wasn’t sure what pissed her off more. Things should have gone back to normal, but the world refused to turn. Lance was iced out by every girl for Kitty’s revenge video, then he was the man to all the football players. The school split right down the middle.

When I walked into school, Lance waved me over. I almost pretended not to see him until he called my name. Jess stood to my right as he apologized for the incident again. Awkwardly I avoided thanking him. I didn’t want to even acknowledge him. Then something miraculous happened and it left me in awe the whole day. Maggie appeared out of a crowd of people and slapped Lance hard enough to spin him into Ethan Piper. I watched in horror and amazement as Maggie stood at my side: “How dare you do that to Kitty!”

“She cheated on me!” Lance defended with fury I’d never seen him express. He stumbled back till Maggie slapped him harder with her opposite hand. She dropped her bag into my arms with a swift demand that I hold her stuff.

“So?! Break up with her, sure, tell her off, you have every right! But you had no right to expose her like that! You distributed revenge porn on Kitty!” And with a deep inhale, she snatched him up by the front of the shirt.

Something flipped on a switch in my head and I lurched forward. It was too late. Maggie’s chest rumbled audibly, and a cough shook her to the core. Then she coughed hard enough to drop Lance and cover her face. Blood trickled out of her mouth and she gasped for air. She snatched up her bag and held it to her chest as she wiped blood off her lips. Maggie looked Lance dead in the eye as she talked through bloody teeth, “Delete every photo you have of Kitty, Delete every text message. And if you so much as put a snapchat of her pinkie toe, I will fuck you up! Got it, McCalister? You disgust me.
